Scene Instability During Head Turns
نویسندگان
چکیده
Various experiments have shown scene-motion thresholds to be greater when the scene moves with the direction of the head turn than when the scene moves against the direction of the head turn. In fact, a virtual scene may appear to be more stable in space when moving slightly with the head turn than when the scne does not move. In this position paper, we discuss current investigations into this illusion and possible explanations.

Influence of visual scene velocity on segmental kinematics during stance.
We investigated how the velocity of anterior-posterior movement of a visual surround affected segmental kinematics during stance. Ten healthy young adults were exposed to sinusoidal oscillation of an immersive virtual scene at five peak velocities ranging from 1.2 to 188 cm/s at each of four frequencies: 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.55 Hz. Root mean square (RMS) values of head, trunk, thigh and shank a...
متن کاملThe Eddy-current-induced Head-tail Instability at the KEK-PS
The head-tail instability of the 12 GeV PS at KEK, has been confirmed by extensive experiments. It turns out that the eddy-current-induced sextupole fields in the rectangularshaped vacuum pipe in the main bending magnets played a crucial role in the head-tail instability during acceleration. The eddy current effect was verified by field measurement and chromaticity measurement in a way of diffe...
متن کاملBilateral vestibular loss leads to active destabilization of balance during voluntary head turns in the standing cat.
The purpose of this study was to determine the source of postural instability in labyrinthectomized cats during lateral head turns. Cats were trained to maintain the head in a forward orientation and then perform a rapid, large-amplitude head turn to left or right in yaw, while standing freely on a force platform. Head turns were biomechanically complex with the primary movement in the yaw plan...

The blowfly Calliphora has a preferred flight attitude from which it may transiently deviate either actively by voluntary aerobatics or, passively, by air turbulence. In order to regain its normal flight attitude the fly performs simultaneously a corrective flight manoeuvre and a compensatory head turn. This is made possible because Calliphora can turn its head about all 3 principal axes of its...
متن کاملEUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH European Laboratory for Particle Physics THE ELECTRON CLOUD INSTABILITY OF THE LHC BEAM IN THE CERN SPS
The electron cloud induced by the LHC beam in the SPS occurs mainly in the dipoles and it is responsible for strong transverse instabilities. In the horizontal plane a coupled bunch mode instability develops in a few tens of turns at injection. Tune shift measurements, mode number and phase space analyses have been performed at different energies and provide information about the electron cloud...
